project idea & motivation

Reengarda doesn’t have their own Nordmark banner for when the Prince and/or Princess come to visit. The Princess is coming to JMBards next weekend, so 2026-03-09 slipping through the day Keldor decided that we should use the shire banner painting supplies to make one, and he brought home a big pallet from work to cut up to make a new frame for painting fabric. When we went to start the banner, he suggested that instead of doing a normal laurel wreath, that I use the same knot-work leaf design I used for Keldor’s laurel kaftan and my Viking Cloak

project progress

  • 2026-03-11 I hemmed it, and started sewing the channel at the top.
  • 2026-03-10 I did all the gutta outline, then we painted it
  • 2026-03-09
    • made a frame for the project and mounted the fabric
    • drew the field division on the fabric
    • drew out the knot leaf pattern in an appropriate size for the project (9 x 2 cm), covered it with clear tape front and back, and cut out the template, cutting away most of the outline for better tracing
    • traced it on the silk scrap test piece and painted it to see if it would work (didn’t bother letting the gutta dry before painting, and didn’t worry about making the lines pretty, this was just a test to see if there was any leaf remaining at this scale after the gutta lines were traced)
    • opened up a paperbag and cut it to the same size as half the banner, added the field division lines, then sketched the placement of the half laurel wreath
    • put the wreath placement pattern under the left side of the banner, and then placed the knot template over each leaf and traced it, and then added the overs and unders
  • 2026-03-10 turned over the paper bag and traced the leaves on the other side of the paper
