Today for work I joined a field trip to help a PhD student collect lake core sediment samples.
We walked out to the middle of the lake
(those little dots are us, I took a photo on the way back from the car to get something)

Drilled holes in the ice

Poked the 4 meter long coring tool down down the hole

Twisted it to collect layers of mud and clay from the bottom of the lake

Lifted it out, and opened the container

Prepared a carrying case

…and transferred the sediment to the case

He will study it to see if he can see changes in which pollens and insects are present after humans come to this area. If he is lucky there will be an occasional seed or something big enough forC14 dating.
While the ice was nice and thick (if rather covered in places with water due to the above-freezing temperatures), the shoreline really underscores just how little snow we had this winter, as it is already gone in many places on the shore:

After work we cut the linoleum for the new bathroom floor, which we will put into place this weekend. Then we got a lot more painting done on the Camp Northern Lights Banner in progress:
