Morning and Dance Workshops

I woke up at 09:00, so I got six hours of sleep, despite staying up late. That gave me time for breakfast before the dance workshop started. The plan had been for Gerdis and Dis to run the workshop, but Dis woke with a migraine, and, unlike Dis, Gerdis didn’t have dance music prepared on her phone. So instead Gerdis played violin, and I did the teaching. This meant for a little more random approach to the class than I think Dis had intended, but most people seemed to enjoy it anyway. Only one person gave me feedback (much later in the day) that the dances got too complicated too fast, but as they also claim to have “two left feet”, I didn’t worry about it too much. When one uses that sort of self-talk to tell oneself that a task will be tough before one even starts it, one is likely to experience it as more difficult than it might otherwise have been.

I did point out that we didn’t do more than very basic dances in the workshop, and when they looked sceptical, we showed them Picking of Sticks, which is medium complicated, but is enough harder than what we did during the workshop to convince them that yes, dances can get much more complicated than what we did. This doesn’t invalidate their experience of the challenge level of those we did, but at no time did their feelings of being challenged lead to mistakes on their part that messed up the dance for the rest of us, so I will call it a win. With luck, their dance confidence will improve with time.

A&S display

In addition to the two dance workshops, we had an Arts and Science display, with the theme of “någon gång” (someday), for those projects you have been thinking of for ages, but haven’t managed to get to yet. This one was fun, as different people interpreted it differently

Aleydis van Leydan: Period lapidary

A nice display on research towards a new skill Aleydis wants to learn, with both a physical display

and a nice written intro as to why it fits the theme of the contest

Plus a nice summary of research done:

It looks like I missed taking a photo of the second page of the research summary, but I got one of the bibliography:

Gerdis: a test tablet woven band

Mia: a bi-bee bag

Asker: a tunic from scraps

ones I didn’t get photos of

Some people used the contest as an excuse to finish up a UFO (at the last minute) for the event (like Lucie’s new yellow dress, finished on Friday evening, when it had originally been intended for Double Wars in May), and still others, including Keldor and I, used it as an excuse for starting a new project the week before the event that we have long wanted to have (the Indoor event snack box).
Eino showed his Viking trousers that he started in 2016, but never quite finished. He made some progress on it, and now everything is done except for the buttonhole, and he’s never made a buttonhole before. We all pointed out that there were many people on site who can do buttonholes, so he can get help (spoiler alert: he forgot the trousers on site when he packed up the next day, so we took them home. Keldor wants to make a new horn button to replace the plastic one, and when he does, I will put in a button hole. Then we can return them.)
There may have been a couple of more, but if so, I failed to get photos.

not entered in the contest, but lovely

Ranghild hand-cut and polished a bit of silver to make the flaming duck from their household badge

loppis

Of course there was a market as well, with a bunch of people selling stuff, from their own hand made stuff, to resale of useful things found second hand.
I bought some lovely black wool fabric, which I would love to use for me, but for which I will instead make “a pretty dress” for Daniel, who will be making me a chainmail banner.
I also bought some of Askatla’s tablet woven trim. Both a blue and white band:

and a lovely all red band:

Feast & feast project

The feast was full of good conversation, I made a nålbinded Black dragon bag, to protect Keldor’s Dragon bottle, and Gerdis had yet another new song, which mentioned a fair numer of people on site. I think I want a copy.

I stayed up till just after 01:00, and woke before 08:00, so got more than six hours of sleep.
