Create an attic bedroom

The vision/motivation

the initial reasons

Part of the reason to want to create a bedroom in the attic is to have another usable room on the main floor, but, since we are going to the effort of building walls and adding insulation, why not make it pretty too?

I have wanted a “wall bed” since I was little and saw one in a drawing in a kids book. Just because I have a king sized bed is no reason not to have one! While I am at it, we can even make it a book nook.

initial vision

So now I have a vision of the east wall of the room comprised of built in drawers for clothes across the width of the room, and up to about hip height. The framing around the drawers can be formed with steps to make climbing into bed easier.

Above the drawers the bed would be centred in the space, with bookshelves on three sides surrounding the bed and framing the window. Perhaps some under bed storage behind the drawers, accessible through sloped and padded hatches. that double as backrests.

The opening to the bed area could be framed by decorative wood carved like knotwork dragons or something, covering the sides of the bookshelves, and curtains (dark blue, of course) could hang down and soften the full effect. It will be interesting to see how near to this vision the project comes.

• I woke up thinking of the attic bedroom, and suddenly thought that perhaps instead of decorating the asbestos pipe to be a fake chimney for an electric “fireplace”, perhaps we can seal it in wetroom wallpaper, paint it, and wrap it in very thick roap to be a cat climbing and scratching post.
• then we could build a pretty arch bridge between the various beams for them to have the run of up. We could then hang pretty things under the arch bridges that are still high enough to be out of the way.
• the electric fireplace we could bild into a thin stone wall in front of the sliding door to the bathroom.
• the new hat rack could go on the wall in the corner of stairs, infront of the door to the cold closet.
• we should put a floor over the insulation in the cold closet, in case the cats ever get in. Then we could put a hanging rack and move the attic coat storage in there

  I went upstairs and helped Keldor with the attic.
  We got most of the north wall of the room covered, and started putting up the celing in the entry area, and covering thst with insulation.
• 2026-03-08 we finally resumed adding insulation to the roof of the bedroom area, and got it mostly covered before we used up the last of the metal lists he had prepared to hold it in place.

• we cleaned away our tools from this project and storage things near where the attic loo will go.

  Today Keldor made some lists to hold the insulation sheets to the attic roof, and they work very well. We put up the first four, and now that he knows they will work, he will make the other type to hold the upper end of the next row down.

• 2025-10-26 beginnings Sunday Began mking progress on the attic room: started putting up the horizontal boards between the uprights to which the tarpaper will attach before we insulate.

• 2025-10-08 new computer we went to the hardware store and bought some vindpapp (no idea what the English word might be), which will be used for step one in insulating one end of the attic
• 2025-10-06 we discussed a relatively simple attic renovation: insulate the portion nearest the stairs to make an upstairs bedroom, freein up the large downstairs room for training and another guestroom space for parties.

Jag håller på att isolera en del av vinden för att göra ett sovrum däruppe. Det vore klokt att även byta fönster tills något lite mer moderna, med glas som isolera, persienner inuti, och ventiler.
Huset är tegel, och nuvarande fönster sitter i ett 90 x 90 cm ram. (Se bifogad bilder). Nuvarande fönster ram är vitt, men jag vill helst har svart.
Hur mycket skulle det kostar att byta den? När kunde ni installera det?

Jag har räknat på ett Ultimat vridfönster som har en utsida i underhållsfri aluminium, svart på både insidan och utsidan, en förspänd mörkläggande plisségardin, svart klickventil för ventilation, svart handtag, smygar och foder invändigt, samt integrerad fönsterbräda. Monterat och klart, med bortforsling av gammalt fönster och plåtning inkl. Fönsterbleck på utsidan, kostar det dig 33 452,00:- inkl. Moms, efter ROT-avdrag.

När man bara byter ett fönster på det här sättet, så blir det mycket startkostnader som läggs på bara ett enda fönster. Det är inte så att du behöver byta fler fönster när du ändå håller på? Priset per fönster går då ner eftersom du inte betalar bilersättning, restid och etablering mer än en gång.

Byter du även fönster? Jag tror att rumet vi håller på med i vinden kommer vara värmare om vi även byta utt fönstret tills något med bättre isolering osv.
Jag kollade med ett företag i Skellefteå som göra fönster, och deras kostnadsförslag var så dyrt att Keldors reaktion var “låter som blåsning ”.
Så nu undrar om det är verkligen så dyrt, och kanske du vet.
